Friends containment cleaning company nominated for awards
TWO friends who lost their jobs during lockdown have taken the plunge to start their own business together – and have now been nominated for two awards.
Jess Edmunds and Lauren Wright worked as cleaners before the pandemic, but once it hit they were laid off.
“We came home from work one day and our boss sent us our P45s,” Ms Edmunds said. “We thought what do we do.
“I was worried about where I was going to lead my life for the next few months, because at that time the world was at a standstill.”
The friends, from Pontypool and Blaenavon, decided to launch Sparkle Cleaning Services.
“We created a logo and decided to try it out for ourselves,” Ms Edmunds said. “Within a few weeks, we had over 1,000 followers on Facebook.
“We cleaned up for family and friends from our wallet. Our social media following grew and we also started cleaning up businesses.
“We just kept moving forward and forward. It was awesome.
Earlier this month they discovered they had been nominated for the Best of Welsh Business Awards in the ‘Best Cleaning Services’ and ‘Best New Business’ categories.
“One day I looked at my emails and we had been nominated for an award,” Ms Edmunds said. “And then we found out that we were up for two awards.
“I called Lauren and said ‘You have to sit down’. She said ‘What’s the matter?’ and I told him that we had been nominated for the awards.
“We were both overwhelmed.
“Throughout the pandemic my business partner Lauren moved and renovated it and set up the business. We are both single parents and I lost my dad last year. But we we just kept going, and I think that’s what got us here now.
“We’re just two girls who want to do things and start from scratch and do something.
“We’re trying to improve our future and show our kids that you can get up in the morning and do something with your life.”
The award ceremony will take place on March 27.
