National Trauma Cleaner Jerry Cook shares gory details about cleaning up murder and suicide scenes

A crime scene cleaner has shared the gory details of his job, such as cleaning a house after the tenant’s body decomposed for 19 months.

National Trauma and Crime Scene Cleaning chief executive Jerry Cook said he got the call to clean the house in Sydney.

The request was no less bizarre than his previous jobs which required him to clean up murder scenes and suicides, empty the houses of hoarders and mop up feces.

“I’ve cleaned houses where people have had popped varicose veins and spurts of blood, people who’ve been sick, people who’ve had wild parties,” Mr Cook said.

The 52-year-old told Daily Mail Australia he had been in the profession for 32 years and proudly admitted he had never vomited – but he came very close.

‘A short time ago I did a job where I cleaned a house in Sydney after the landlord had decayed there for 19 months,’ he said.

“I’ve cleaned houses where people have had popped varicose veins and spurts of blood, people who’ve been sick, people who’ve had wild parties,” Mr Cook said.

“The owner had no relatives living in Australia. They only had one relative living abroad and they didn’t get along with them.

“The wooden house had absorbed the smell. The smell had penetrated to the floor. The whole place had to be searched.

Mr Cook revealed that it was not even his worst experience and his first time with a decomposing body was even more horrifying.

Mr Cook started working as a commercial cleaner aged 18 in Queensland.

“We started out doing carpet cleaning and water damage,” he said. “We have carried out fire damage restoration work, saved the toilets in the bathrooms.”

His first exposure to a decomposing body came after an estate agent called him and asked if he could clean a house in Cairns.

“The police told me the Yellow Pages made the deliveries,” he said.

“They actually found the body was slumped over the dining room chair and the body had practically melted from all the decomposition.”

Mr Cook said the smell and bodily fluids had been absorbed into every corner of the two-storey house.

“The body pretty much filled the dining room,” he said. “The bodily fluids went into the kitchen, into the wiring downstairs. The light needed to be cleaned.

The cleanup took the labor of two workers and five days to complete.

“I’ve never seen this in my whole life,” he said. “The place was full of flies and maggots, it was disgusting.”

One of the most shocking cleanups took place after a person deliberately jumped from the 27th floor of a building.

“The person had hit three balconies on the way down,” he said. “One of the legs was severed and caught in one of the railings.”

Mr Cook said that although his workers were well protected, nothing stopped the terrible smells.

“Staff threw up,” he said. “Many staff vomited into their masks.”
