With recent flooding and damaged highways, delays and closures of our main roads to the coast, we’ve been busy exploring BC in a different direction! Radium, BC piqued my interest and since I realized how little I knew about the city, we decided it was time for a family visit!

Just five and a half hours from Kelowna, Radium is an exceptional choice for a quick weekend getaway. We brought the whole adventure loving family, however, I would come here with an adventurous friend or for a romantic getaway as well.

On my way:

I highly recommend a quick stop on the way out of town, to gray monk to stock up on local wines from this family winery. The impressive tasting room offers epic mountain and lake views. If you love full-bodied reds and mouth-watering bubbles, this pitstop is essential. Ask the knowledgeable staff for the Odyssey Meritage, my personal favorite, to enjoy as soon as you arrive at Radium.

Where to stay:

Bighorn Meadows Resort is a gorgeous accommodation with the perfect amount of space for a family. Our two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite with a fully equipped kitchen, dining and living room, wrap-around terrace, in-suite laundry and open-concept was almost enough that we never left the hotel. hotel!

With panoramic views of the Springs Golf Course and mountains, two hot tubs, outdoor pool, playground, and visiting bighorn sheep, this hotel can be enjoyed in any season.

A winter stay here is a comfortable and luxurious experience. With space to enjoy the kids in the living room, around the fire, playing games and reading books, we have made family memories here. Of course, it’s also nice to put the kids to bed in their bedrooms and enjoy the calm of the evening on the deck or, in our case, around a charcuterie board.

Where to have a coffee:

It’s not much to see from the outside, but don’t miss Bighorn Cafe! I have enjoyed the best London Fog oat milk in my life and the breakfast here is divine! There are endless choices of sweet and savory products, fresh every day. With a cozy atmosphere and the friendliest staff, we came here twice during our short stay at Radium and I’m already craving my next cinnamon roll!

What to do:

The obvious first choice is the famous Radium Hot Springs. Nestled in the glorious mountains, the hot springs are a 5 minute drive from the village. The route will take you through the Instagram-worthy Sinclair Canyon, so have your camera ready.

The odorless waters and serene nature of Radium Hot Springs attract many tourists, plan to spend your first morning here. During our visit, the freezing temperatures turned the mist from the hot spring to frost on the surrounding branches. The result was a Narnia-esque experience, a fairy tale feeling that we all enjoyed.

Your second stop on a winter tour is the Windermere White Path, a well-maintained 30km multi-use trail on Lake Windermere. Actively used by skaters, tobogganers, hockey fans and fat-bike riders, this trail is maintained by the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club. It should be noted that in 2014, the Guinness Book of Records designated it as the longest skating rink in the world!

There is an access point that we used to take at Windermere Beach and there are intersections that create four smaller loops in the big trail. Ice condition updates are available on the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club Facebook page.

On the way back to Bighorn Meadows Resort for a glass of champagne in the deep soaking tub, stop for dinner at Steak & Schnitzel Haus from the Black Forest for amazing comfort food. This recommendation from a friend wasn’t originally on our itinerary, but we saw it on the way back and decided to check it out. I did a quick post on my Instagram stories of the Bavarian themed restaurant storefront and got an overwhelming response from people who had loved the place!

While summer brings a myriad of additional activities for visitors, such as ziplining, rafting, hiking and golf, the winter vibes of this friendly village are some of the most peaceful I’ve experienced.
