* The car will be offered in its own dedicated auction, offered without reservation
From the private collection of John Brown 4×4
The car was built at the Land Rover plant in Solihull in 1984 and then used in mainland Europe, possibly by the German military. Two military enthusiasts in York bought the car in 2010 and performed a replication to “SAS” specs, researching and installing various parts to give the look we see today.
Both machine guns (.30 and .50 caliber) are professionally manufactured dummy weapons by Crossfire of West Sussex. These guns carry Crossfire certificates to this effect and are legal for civilians to own, display and drive the car fitted with them on UK roads.
Classic Land Rover (r) pundits John Brown 4×4 bought the Gunship in 2020 after it had been in dry storage for some time. The team of experts returned the vehicle to service over a 12-month period, improving handling with new shocks, brakes, a new fan belt and carburetor, among other parts to the correct specifications. Military gear and additional items were also obtained during the return to service to complete the outfit.
Due to the unique nature of this vehicle, the John Brown 4×4 team initially decided that it would be kept both as a centerpiece in the showroom and for special outings with staff. However, the John Brown 4×4 showroom has recently been remodeled, so the vehicle is now available for purchase through RM Sotheby’s.
“The features and military touches of this Land Rover (r) come together to create an exceptional SAS car recreation. The two car-mounted dummy machine guns, in .30 and .50 caliber specs, really grab your attention. .
“Although the car is left-hand drive due to its military use in continental Europe, there is no windshield or roof to provide the driver with fantastic visibility on UK roads.
“The car has been professionally repaired and restored, so that the driving experience matches the look of the car.
“Our team had a fantastic time working on this car. It has been a centerpiece of our showroom, where it catches the attention of every customer who comes to visit our site. We have even used this Gunship on occasion to create customer collections also little more special.
“However, we recently redesigned our showroom and decided to give a member of the public the chance to own this fantastic car. The Gunship is an exciting ride that turns heads wherever you take it.”
You may have the chance to purchase this unique car between October 6 and 13, at RM Sotheby’s Open Roads auction.
The Land Rover (r) Gunship will be auctioned along with other vintage and rare cars from around the world.
