Spokane Parks Foundation steps up fundraising efforts for dog park at Riverfront Park

SPOKANE, Washington – Soon there will be a new place in downtown Spokane where your furry friend can run.
Travis Blanchard’s dog Stevie Nicks would enjoy a brand new dog park.
“I think it’s very important to have a dog park to socialize with my dog,” Blanchard said.
The town of Spokane has an official Dog park at the Pont Haut. There is also a dog park on South Hill, but it is not owned by the city.

The Spokane Parks Foundation says it has been trying to fundraise since 2018 to give dogs another place to run.
“The only thing we knew was going to be needed as people became more and more urban was to have space for our furry friends to come together with their people,” said Terri Fortner. of the Spokane Parks Foundation.
“I think another centrally located would be great. A great resource for people who don’t have lessons and don’t have a fence and for socializing their dog. Very important, ”said Jennifer Gwynn, who welcomes a dog.
The Spokane Parks Foundation needs $ 750,000 to build the dog park. So far, $ 250,000 has been raised.
It took a few years for that money to arrive. Gwynn says fundraising efforts have gained momentum recently.
“We knew there would be a need for a special partner, and we are not in a position at this time to announce who this special partner is. It’s happening very soon, ”continued Fortner. “But we knew it would take a very special community partner to lead the campaign. As we finalized these details, we felt it was time now to step out into the community and open it up to everyone.
Brick West Brewing Co. hosted an event to help adopt dogs and cats and raise funds for the dog park.
The park will be located across the river from the Centennial Hotel, north of Lilac Bowl, around the forest shelter.
“The dog park will be built around that, so in bad weather or in very hot weather, during the summer, there will be places to take shelter, there will be water there, there will be toilets. There’s a whole big plan to redevelop this space and make it meaningful and make it a destination for people, ”said Fortner.
The goal is to start in the spring and complete the dog park by next fall, she said.
“It’s a bold plan, and we have to really work hard to make it happen,” Fortner said.
Brick West Brewing will have plush dog toys to buy for $ 20. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the foundation to help build the dog park. To know how to help otherwise, Click here.
